SCHOOL OF BASIC STUDIES
The School of Basic Studies at DBCC is an educational program designed to prepare enrolled students to achieve academic proficiency at the 9.0 grade level or above in Reading, Mathematics, and Language Arts.
Each student desiring to enroll at DBCC is administered the TABE (Test of Adult Basic Education) test. Students testing with entrance TABE grade subtests lower than 9.0 in Reading, Math, and/or Language Arts will be enrolled in the School of Basic Studies and study in ABE (Adult Basic Education) classes. Students are TABE retested for proficiency with the Reading, Math, and Language Arts subtests by instructor advisement. Students must achieve TABE subtests of 9.0 or above in all ABE academic areas to exit the ABE program and advance to studies in either the DBCC High School or GED program.
The state of Florida has established literacy levels that designate the students academic level upon entrance to the ABE program. ABE instructors in our School of Basic Studies customize and individualize instruction to meet the needs of each student as he/she works through the state mandated "literacy completion point" levels (LCP).
Students are instructed with state of the art materials including field-tested written materials and computerized programs. Instructors are well prepared with continuing education. They are geared to provide student success, utilizing a combination of all available resources. The Career Center and Counseling Department also are available to guide students.
The School of Basic Studies, ABE classes are conducted Monday through Friday on individual campuses; both day and night study is available, however night classes run Monday through Thursday. Please call individual campus locations for schedules and instructors.
