Extraordinary Circumstances
Situations That May Not Be Appealed:
Student Appeal Forms
Office of Student Appeals
The Appeals process provides students an opportunity to appeal financial aid suspension, full cost of tuition, fourth attempt of a course, withdrawal/drops after posted deadlines and requests for grade changes from "F" to "W". Appeals must be based on documented extraordinary circumstances beyond the student's control.

Students must start the appeals process in the Question and Answer Center on any campus.

Types of Appeals
1. Academic Refund Appeal: Can be used for the following types of situations:

  • Withdrawing from course(s) in the current semester after the posted
deadline. (This appeal takes approximately 2 weeks to receive a
    decision.)

  • Dropping course(s) with a refund in the current semester after the posted deadline. (This appeal takes approximately 2 weeks to receive
    a decision.)

The deadline to submit a drop with a refund appeal is the last day of the semester in which the course was taken.

  • Requesting a grade change from "F" or "I" to "W".(This appeal takes
approximately 4-6 weeks to receive a decision.)

Beginning with courses taken in the Fall 2005 semester, Grade Change appeals must be filed prior to the end of the next major semester. Courses taken in Fall semesters can be appealed until the end of the following Spring semester. Courses taken in the Spring or Summer semesters can be appealed until the end of the following Fall semester.

NOTE: Courses taken prior to Fall 2005 will fall under the former 2 year statute of limitation.

    2. Financial Aid Suspension: Can be used when a student has been notified by the Financial Aid Office that he/she has not made satisfactory progress for one of the following reasons:

  • GPA below a 2.0

  • Didn't complete at least 75% of courses attempted

  • Attempted too many hours (Students are allowed to attempt up to 120
credits to earn one degree and up to 130 credits to complete two programs
    of study.

Financial Aid Appeals take approximately 3-4 weeks to receive a decision.

Students may file a Financial Aid Appeal ONLY ONCE for suspensions
due to GPA below 2.0 or less than 75% completion rate.
    If the financial
aid appeal is approved the student must maintain satisfactory progress,
as defined by Financial Aid eligibility requirements to continue to
receive financial aid. If the student does not maintain satisfactory
progress he/she may not appeal a second time.

Students may file ONLY ONCE for having attempted too many hours. If the
financial aid appeal is approved, the student will receive financial aid
for the amount of hours approved in the appeal and may not file another
financial aid appeal to increase hours again. If the student exceeds the
approved hours their financial aid will be suspended. If a student is
appealing for additional hours to complete a limited access major he/she
must be admitted to that major prior to filing for additional hours.

    3. Full Cost for Third Attempt of a Course

  • Students enrolling in a course for the third time must pay the full cost
of instruction, which is approximately four times the Florida rate. On
the third attempt, the student will get a permanent grade and will not be
permitted to withdraw on this third attempt. This appeal can be filed
only once per course. Courses taken in Fall 1997 or after will be counted
as attempts. Attempts before that term will not count for purposes of
    determining the higher cost.

  • The deadline to submit a Full Cost Appeal is the last day of the semester in which the course is taken.

Full Cost Appeals take approximately 2 weeks to receive a decision.

    4. Petition for Fourth Attempt of a Course

  • Students may appeal for permission to take a college credit course a
fourth time due to major extenuating curcumstances, but the third and
fourth grades will both appear on the transcript. The fourth attempt will
be charged at full cost. Courses taken in the Fall 1997 or after will be
counted as attempts. Attempts before that term will not count for the
purposes of determining the higher cost.

Fourth Attempt Appeals take approximately 2 weeks to receive a decision.
