Student Disability Services (SDS) at Daytona State College provides comprehensive support services to students with documented disabilities. The department includes three private testing rooms and an adaptive computer lab on the Daytona Beach Campus. The SDS Advisors serving the DeLand, Deltona, New Smyrna Beach/Edgewater, and Flagler/Palm Coast Campuses can arrange for alternative locations for students with disabilities to take their tests. The SDS staff is comprised of the SDS Director and five SDS Advisors. The SDS Technical Advisor, who supports all SDS assistive technology, also serves students with disabilities on the Deland Campus on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays. On Thursdays, the SDS Technical Advisor serves students with disabilities on the Deltona Campus. Another SDS Advisor serves the New Smyrna Campus on Thursdays. Another SDS Advisor serves the students with disabilities on the Flagler/Palm Coast Campuses on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.
Student Disability Services offers support services and academic accommodations for Daytona State students with documented disabilities. We comply with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, as amended and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990, as amended. According to these federal laws, students with disabilities "must have a substantial impairment to a major life function in order to receive accommodations." The impairment must be permanent in nature, or for an indeterminate duration. Temporary impairments are not disabilities under the law. SDS determines the types of support services and academic accommodations or adjustments for which a student is eligible to receive. SDS makes determinations based solely on documentation from licensed medical and or mental health professionals, which clearly delineate the limitations resulting from a person's disability. Our mission is to ensure student success by advocating for students with disabilities while providing them with auxiliary aides, assistive technology, and other reasonable accommodations to participate in the programs, services, and activities of the College.
